When we bought this property, it was a grassy field surrounded by a decrepit barbed wire fence. As we developed the space, we tried to incorporate plantings that would thrive without much interference from us. ( Side note: we installed drip irrigation. The consultant who worked with us said "People will think you are master gardeners".) On the north side of the house we planted honeysuckle, so that the intoxicating scent would be handy. We also planted one hydrangea plant, because they are supposed to do well without a lot of sun.
As you can see in the photo above, the hydrangea is thriving. And see that black pot? I've pinned a branch into some soil in there, hoping to root a cutting that we can take with us to "the new place".
We knew the hydrangea was a climber; we didn't realize it was a diver as well.
It has gently overtaken the rock wall that borders the patio on the lower level of the house.
The seating area, informed by this wall of green, feels luxurious; drinking a coffee out here as the valley awakes is just one of the pleasures that awaits the new owners.
